Ecthyma, Causes, Symptoms, Ecthyma Treatment and Prevention

Ecthyma is a disease of skin caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes and characterised by crusted sores beneath which ulcers form. It is similar to impetigo, but Ecthyma goes through the outer layer to the deeper layer of skin. Contagious ecthyma has been found worldwide in all countries that raise sheep. In the U.S., this disease is seen most often in the Western states. They may more large to a sore of diameter in 1-3.5 cm. Mostly the thighs, ankle, buttocks and feet are affected by Ecthyma. Ecthyma lesion usually begins as a vesicle (small blister) or pustule on an inflamed area of skin. A hard crust that is harder and thicker than the crust of impetigo soon covers this.

Staphylococcal and streptococcal ecthyma occur most commonly on the lower extremities of children, the elderly, and people who have diabetes. Lesions are located most commonly on lower extremities.

Causes of Ecthyma

The streptococcal organism most often causes ecthyma. The infection may start due to presents of scratches, dermatitis and insect bite. It is often appear on the legs and forearms.

Symptoms of Ecthyma

Ecthyma begins as pustule or small blister on an affected area. Ecthyma usually arises on the lower legs or feet of children, diabetics, or neglected elderly people.

Treatment for Ecthyma

Treatment for ecthyma disease mostly depends on the type and severity of infection. Many home remedies are suggestied and medical treatment includes taking antibiotics such as such as povidone iodine, antibacterial Manuka honey or Crystacide (hydrogen peroxide) cream. Try this home remedy - Soak a clean cloth in a mixture of half a cup of white vinegar in a litre of tepid water. Apply the compress to moist areas for about ten minutes several times a day. Gently wipe off the crusts.

Prevention

In tropical climates pay special attention to hygiene and use insect repellents to reduce bites infection, also these tips are useful in prevention -

  • One should cleanse all insect bites with antiseptic cleanser.
  • One should encourage your child to avoid digging or scratching crusts.
  • One should call your doctor immediately if you are affected with ecthyma.
