Acne Myths and FactsThere are number of causes of acne and are a lot of myths and misconceptions about acne. Clearing up some of the misunderstandings about acne is what this article is about. Myth #1: Masturbation or sex causes acne - This antiquated notion, originating as early as the 17th century to dissuade young people from having premarital sex, is just plain wrong. Don't believe the hype. Acne is related to sex We've probably all heard that either celibacy or too much sex causes pimples. There is no evidence for this. Myth #2 Acne Leads to depression - Acne only affects appearance Acne can also cause deep psychological distress. Severe acne can lead to low self-image and feeling depressed. There is a strong link between severe acne and social withdrawal. Myth #3: Certain foods cause acne - Some studies have not found any connection between the diet and acne till now. Foods such as French fries, chocolates, pizza or other greasy foods do not cause acne. Acne is caused by specific foods Chocolate has long had a reputation as a pimple producer. Studies have shown no scientific evidence that this is true. Myth #4: Acne is caused by poor hygiene - This belief may have arisen because of the skin infections associated with acne. However, lack of cleanliness is not the reason for outbreaks of acne. Overuse of harsh scrubs and too much washing can make the acne worse and it leads to flaky and dry skin. Acne Myth #5 - Acne is only a teenage condition - It is true that most adolescents have acne, but it also affects some adults. Acne generally clears up by the early 20s. But some people experience acne for the first time as late as their 40s. Myth #6: Sun exposure helps acne - Sunbathing is good for acne Exposure to the sun dries out excess oils, so it does improve acne short-term. However, long-term the skin adapts and the acne is unfazed. Sun exposure improves the appearance of acne, damages the skin and causes macules and hyperpigmentation and makes the skin dark, so there are less chances of acne to be seen. Worse, there is scientific evidence that sun exposure damages the skin and increases the chance of skin cancer. Myth #7: Makeup Causes Acne - Makeup causes acne Some makeup products can clog the pores, which is bad for the health of your skin. Cosmetics that are labeled "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic" are safe to use. Some brands are made with ingredients that actually treat acne.
