Severe acne - Symptoms, Treatment of Severe acne

Severe acne can affect many facets of a person's life, causing a great deal of embarrassment and stress. Severe acne is developed by heredity, bacterial infection and changes in the level of hormones. The treatment for severe acne takes long term for removing them.

Four types of severe acne

  • Acne conglobata

  • Acne fulminans

  • Gram negative folliculitis

  • Nodulocystic acne

Acne Conglobata - This is a relatively rare form of severe acne vulgaris but it is extremely disfiguring and can cause severe psychological as well as physical suffering. Acne conglobata may be preceded by acne cysts , papules or pustules that do not heal, but instead rapidly deteriorate.

Acne fulminans - This is a sudden appearance of Acne Conglobata accompanied with a fever and aching of the joints. This type of acne can cause by symptoms of ulcerating and severe acne and inflammation of knees, hips and joints and high fever. Corticosteroids are very effective to treat acne fulminans. It appears suddenly in a person with inflammatory acne and is characterized by:

  • Symptoms of severe and often ulcerating acne

  • Fever

  • Inflammation and aching of joints, especially hips and knees

Gram negative folliculitis - Gram negative folliculitis is an severe inflammation of follicles caused by a bacterial infection that can result from long-term antibiotic treatment. This condition may be caused by long-term treatment of acne with antibiotics.

Nodulocystic Acne - Cysts are relatively uncommon in acne; however, this form of severe acne is characterized by cysts, which may measure several centimeters in diameter. This type of acne is particularly vulnerable to scarring, so it is advisable to have it treated by a dermatologist. Isotretinoin or antibiotics are used to treat these types of severe acne.
