Cystic Acne - Symptoms, Treatment of Cystic Acne
Cystic acne is also known as Grade IV acne and is characterized by the presence of whiteheads, blackhead, pimples and most importantly- cysts.
Cystic acne affects deeper skin tissue that forms more superficial inflammation from common acne. Cystic acne is most common on the face and typically occurs in the teenage years.
Cysts are similar to nodules except that they are filled with pus. They are painful and likely to scar if untreated.

Cystic Acne commonly appears on the arms, upper body, legs, neck or face.
They can be painful. Again, scarring is common with cystic acne. Squeezing an acne cyst may cause a deeper infection and more painful inflammation which will last much longer than if you had left it alone.
The acne cyst, in contrast to the blackheads and whiteheads, is generally huge.
Causes of Cystic Acne
Cysts are caused when hormonal shifts result in your skin glands overproducing oil (sebum) at an unnatural rate.
Sometimes, it can associate by the result of dead cells in the hair follicle and make on the surface of the skin.
Yet, for many teenagers, hormones are all out of control and this can cause these oil glands to simply produce too much oil. Eventually, bacteria find there way into this area and irritate it enough to cause the infection on the skin. This is what cystic acne is.
Signs and symptoms of Cystic Acne
- Blackheads
- Red in color
- Pustules
- Tender and hard lump under the skin
- Whiteheads
- Nodule
- Scarring and inflammation of the skin
Treatment of
It is highly recommended that people with cystic acne should visit a dermatologist. If the patient is suffering from light to moderate cystic acne then he/she can take antibiotics which have the tendency to kill the bacterium but approximately 30%-45% of today's cystic acne strains are resistant to one or more of the common antibiotics, making them useless.
An acne cyst can also be treated with certain bacterial resistances against certain antibiotics.
Here are some other recommendations for boosting your treatment:
- Use an "ice treatment": rub ice onto inflamed areas for 2-3 minutes a day.
- They should treat the bacteria that are infecting the skin.
- They should stop or slow down the production of oils through either destroying oil glands or through controlling hormone levels.
- They should protect the face from new infections forming through methods such as cleansing and exfoliation.
- Add sulfur to benzoyl peroxide lotion:
Add ½ teaspoon per one ounce of benzoyl peroxide lotion. Mix together well (grind sulfur into a powder) and store in the refrigerator. You should use this for nightly treatments only since it may have a yellow tint.
